Reward and Discipline

Reward: Japanese educational environment seems to have no form of reward and discipline in common perception. Here, the reward is replaced by motivation and encouragement, the discipline is replaced by using positive discipline form (It should be emphasized that the students in Japanese schools, Japanese International School are not completely brought up in lavender, anywhere, anytime and all their activities are noticed for both study and exercising consciousness). Psychologists believe that the reward is not as effective as teachers express belief in what the students done and sometimes the reward in the usual way may also be in opposition to encouragement and motivation. The encouragement and motivation focus on strengths, efforts and progress in study process of each individual that will lead to an increase of self-respect, pride, independence in study, and cooperation among the students. Conversely, the usual praise or criticism only focus on  academic result, weaknesses, mistakes and comparison between this student and other students, this can lead to the feeling of shame, humiliation, dependence and shirking, and the need to please, competition may lead to loss of trust, rivalry and hostility among the students.

Discipline: Educators agree that discipline is necessary, should include in school and class. According to traditional method of education, disciplining is done when the students cause a disturbance, violate the rules or become stubborn. These behaviors needs to be restrained by an external discipline. In the modern education, the educators think that the discipline relates to both students and teachers, it helps those who have different ability and responsibility to coordinate tasks together for respect difference, hobby, interest and learning style of each student. The objective to be achieved is self-inflicted discipline, both teachers and students need to develop the discipline and self-awareness. The teachers must have exemplary behavior and communication for the students to follow. Therefore, the common discipline method should be replaced with positive discipline method.

The positive discipline method increases enhance positiveness in teaching students about responsible behaviors and behaviors. It focuses on recognizing and encouraging positive behaviors, negative behavior will be "ignored". Focusing on students' positive behavior, the teachers can define what accepted and respected of each student.

It may be difficult to find positive behaviors in some students. The key for implementing education is to prevent bad behaviors by enough attention to the needs of constitution, mind, affection and society of students so that the students can learn in active, creative, exciting manner, make the students feel safe when they are accepted, respected, and become a part of community. In these cases, the teachers will discuss along with the students on the accepted and not accepted behaviors. Both of them (teachers and students) will figure what behaviors will not be forgiven and set up rules in the class. When the students create rules for themselves, they will be easier to follow than when the teachers give them the rules. These principles should be brief, clear and understandable.

Applying the positive principle of discipline is a challenge requiring time. Apart from the self-conscious, discipline, the teachers should be calm and patient, should have a positive attitude towards students, love and respect them. The students will feel teachers' attention and will have attitude for responding such interest. The teachers' attitude in class decides good or bad behavior of the students.
